Susie’s sculptures tell a story through subtle gestures and movements. Her art comes to life with the turn of the head, arch of the neck, gaze of the eyes which combine to convey a particular moment and feeling. Susie wants the observer to see beauty, fragility, strength, personality, and intensity when enjoying her sculptures.

Born in Michigan, Susie fell in love with horses as a young girl and eventually rode and showed competitively in the hunter-jumpers throughout her life. While she has a BFA in sculpted design, she only returned to sculpting 10 years ago, after raising a family, teaching skiing, showing horses and running her farm.

Today at her home in Wellington, Florida, Susie’s studio reflects her current work in bronze, a medium she says offers imperfections that absorb and reflect light. It’s evident from her finished bronzes that Susie enjoys exploring the texture of surfaces and how it adds to the movement and complexity of her work.

Susie has studied equine anatomy with Cynthia Rigden in Arizona, and Shelley Hunter in Kentucky both masters in capturing the anatomy and emotion of animals. Susie is pursuing larger-scale bronzes - perhaps half lifesized - as a way to push herself as an artist and incorporate the latest methods.

Susie’s small, limited edition bronzes are in private collections in Michigan, Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida. In addition, she has pieces in the National Horse Show and the Menlo Charity Horse Show collections.

Susie is now segueing into ceramics and marble. Always an adventure!
